What is a commercial license and do you need one?

Commercial licenses provide the ability to utilize the design within a commercialized setting so long as the design is not being redistributed in any digital file format. This means that commercial license owners are permitted to do the following:

  • Use the design to create physical products that are in turn sold.
  • Personal or commercial use can not in any way be used to incorporate a design into a digitally created image that is used for the purpose of displaying the image commercially (e.g. part of an advertisement).
  • Commercial license owners may not in any way redistribute or sell files in any format containing the commercial license image.
  • Commercial license options do not provide any rights to adjust files and then claim them as original creations, thus bypassing the original copyright holder's ownership and rights.
  • Commercial License options are available for 1) producing up to 50 units, 2) producing up to 250 units, and c) an unlimited option, which allows you to produce an unlimited number of units for commercial purposes.

For instance, if you plan to produce 40 pallet signs using a design from Footprints of Inspiration, you would need to purchase the commercial license allowing "Up to 50" units. If you plan to produce 150 units, you would need to purchase the license allowing "Up to 250 units." If you plan to produce over 250 units, you would need to purchase the unlimited license.

  • All Commercial License options include a personal use license and can freely be utilized for personal use as well.
  • It is permissible for individuals to reproduce physical goods using personally licensed images for any individual, organization, or event, so long as it is not with the intent of re-sale purposes.

If you will be using the designs to create physical products that will, in turn be sold, you WILL need to purchase a commercial license.
