How to Navigate the Pain When God Says No

Woman frustrated - holding her head in her hands because God said no
We’ve all had a time in our life when we’ve prayed for something and God gave us a big, fat “no”. It leaves us with a mix of disappointment, confusion, and yes, even anger. I know how hard it is to navigate what feels like rejection from God. So in this episode, we’re tackling what to do when God says no.

In today’s show, my guest and student, Ali Horan, is joining me as she shares her journey of pain and heartache through a time when God didn’t answer her prayers the way she’d hoped.

  • the pain, heartache and defeat she felt when God said no.
  • her emotional journey through anger and heartbreak.
  • how this experience has altered her approach to prayer and deepened her trust in God.

Ali will also reflect on how she’s come to see God’s hand in the situation and share the beautiful blessing He brought in the midst of it.

If you’ve ever received a, “no,” to a prayer request, then this episode is for you.

Navigating THE PAIN when god says no

Ali, one of my Confident Prayer Warrior students, shares a story that most of us can relate to in one way or another.

She opens up about a time in her life when something she wanted so deeply, didn’t turn out the way she hoped. The journey she describes isn’t just about the initial pain and disappointment, but also the subsequent healing and growth she’s experienced.

She talks about the anger and frustration that so many of us can relate to, and how these feelings transformed into understanding, growth and transformation.

The beauty found in God’s no

What makes Ali’s story so powerful isn’t just the narrative of unanswered prayers, but how she navigated this experience to a place where she could see the bigger picture. Through her story, we begin to understand that, sometimes, God’s refusals aren’t setbacks, but setups for something so much bigger than we could ever imagine for ourselves.

Ali shares how this experience has reshaped her perspective on prayer and given her a deeper trust in our Father. It’s a reminder that our relationship with Him grows deeper during our most challenging times.

Ali’s journey will inspire you to take a look at your own prayer life and consider what it means to trust in God’s timing and plan.

what to do when god says no

Inside our own prayer requests, there’s a hidden path of growth and transformation.

Whether you’re currently working through a “no” from God, or you’ve been there in the past, there’s something in this conversation for you.

Ali’s story will give you a new perspective and the comfort of knowing you’re not alone in your feelings.

A woman lies awake beside her sleeping husband, quietly reflecting on how to pray for him when she doesn't know what to say.

How to Pray for Your Husband When You Don’t Know What to Say

You noticed it at dinner.

Your husband was quieter than usual, and when you asked how work went, he said, “Fine.” But you’ve been married long enough to know when fine doesn’t really mean fine.

You knew something was weighing on him — something just felt off.

Later that night, lying beside him in the dark, you wished you knew how to help. So you did the one thing you knew you could do — you prayed, “Lord, help him.”

It was honest and exactly what you wanted God to do. But almost as soon as you said it, you started wondering if you should have said more.

Is that really enough? Shouldn’t I know how to pray for my own husband?

Maybe you’ve joined the 31-day prayer challenges for wives, or you started the prayer book that’s still sitting on your nightstand with a bookmark somewhere around chapter three. You’ve heard other women pray confidently for their husbands, covering everything from his work and health to your husband’s relationships, protection, and spiritual life.

Meanwhile, you’re struggling just to put one sentence together.

And when you love someone this much, it’s easy for that struggle to start feeling like more than simply not knowing what to say. You begin wondering if you’re doing this “right” or whether your prayers for him are making any difference at all.

But sometimes the reason we don’t know what to say isn’t because we have nothing to pray about. It’s because we’ve put so much pressure on ourselves to say the right thing that an honest prayer no longer feels like enough.

So before we talk about what to pray for your husband, I want to take some of that pressure off.

Because learning how to pray for your husband doesn’t begin with finding more powerful words. It begins with understanding what God actually asks of us when we come to Him in prayer.

Lord, Help My Unbelief: A Prayer When Faith Feels Hard

You’ve prayed about it more times than you can count.

At first, you prayed with confidence. You believed God was working even when you couldn’t yet see it. But now you’re praying about the same situation for the third year in a row.

And somewhere in the middle of another prayer, you think, “I don’t even know if I believe this will change anymore.”

Almost as quickly as you think it, the guilt creeps in. I mean, what kind of Christian doubts God while she prays?
