Filled with heated debates and a lot of uncertainty, election years can be incredibly stressful.

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the onslaught of news and social media opinions, leaving us ready to pull the covers over our heads and hide out until they’re over.

In this episode, I’m digging into the Bible to see how to have a peaceful spirit, even in an election year.

I had something else planned for this particular episode, but after listening to the news recently, I felt a tug on my heart to switch gears. And if you don’t live in the States, stick with me because these lessons can be applied anytime you’re feeling weary.

In this episode, I’ll dig into the Bible to uncover…

  • what scripture teaches us about fostering a peaceful spirit.
  • 3 powerful steps you can take to cultivate a spirit of peace — even when everything around you is so noisy.
  • Plus I put together 30 days of prayer prompts to help you foster a peaceful spirit, no matter what’s going on around you.

GUARDING YOUR HEART TO FOSTER A PEACEFUL SPIRIT

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” Proverbs 4:23 NLT

Proverbs teaches us just how crucial it is to guard our hearts.

So in today’s show, I’ll uncover the importance of protecting our mental and emotional health — something that isn’t easy to do when every time we turn on the news, both sides are doing nothing but blaming the other.

But by intentionally setting out to protect our minds, we can learn to foster a peaceful spirit — even when everything around us feels anything but peaceful. In this episode, I’ll share some practical tips and strategies to help you walk this out.

The Bible teaches us,

“You keep those people safe who continue to trust in you. You give them peace in their minds, because they believe in you.” Isaiah 26:3 EASY

As we continue to stay connected to God through prayer and Bible study, we’re better able to handle the noise and chaos in these times.

STAND ON WHAT YOU KNOW TO HAVE A PEACEFUL SPIRIT

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 NIV

It’s easy to let our fears spiral out of control in an election year. We have everyone shouting doom and gloom from both sides. It’s no wonder we’re afraid of what will happen if the, “wrong,” person is elected.

But as I talk about in this week’s show, we have to stand on what we know to be true. In other words, feelings aren’t facts. We don’t have to believe every fear or worry that enters our thoughts.

If we want to learn how to have a peaceful spirit when everything around us feels anything but, we have to remember that our peace doesn’t come from the outcome of the elections.

When the world is shouting, “the sky is falling,” we must stand on what we know to be true — our peace comes from God, alone.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PRAYER TO FOSTER A PEACEFUL SPIRIT

The truth is, although this can be a very stressful time, it’s actually a beautiful opportunity to grow closer to God through prayer.

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 NLT

As we take our concerns and worries to our Father, we create a deeper connection to Him, in turn, allowing His peace to push out our fears and fill us with His hope and truth.

The important thing to remember is that our prayers don’t have to be formal or eloquent. Just start talking. Open up about your fears and worries; your hopes, and your needs. Thank Him for His faithfulness and ask for His peace to fill your heart.

A woman lies awake beside her sleeping husband, quietly reflecting on how to pray for him when she doesn't know what to say.

How to Pray for Your Husband When You Don’t Know What to Say

You noticed it at dinner.

Your husband was quieter than usual, and when you asked how work went, he said, “Fine.” But you’ve been married long enough to know when fine doesn’t really mean fine.

You knew something was weighing on him — something just felt off.

Later that night, lying beside him in the dark, you wished you knew how to help. So you did the one thing you knew you could do — you prayed, “Lord, help him.”

It was honest and exactly what you wanted God to do. But almost as soon as you said it, you started wondering if you should have said more.

Is that really enough? Shouldn’t I know how to pray for my own husband?

Maybe you’ve joined the 31-day prayer challenges for wives, or you started the prayer book that’s still sitting on your nightstand with a bookmark somewhere around chapter three. You’ve heard other women pray confidently for their husbands, covering everything from his work and health to your husband’s relationships, protection, and spiritual life.

Meanwhile, you’re struggling just to put one sentence together.

And when you love someone this much, it’s easy for that struggle to start feeling like more than simply not knowing what to say. You begin wondering if you’re doing this “right” or whether your prayers for him are making any difference at all.

But sometimes the reason we don’t know what to say isn’t because we have nothing to pray about. It’s because we’ve put so much pressure on ourselves to say the right thing that an honest prayer no longer feels like enough.

So before we talk about what to pray for your husband, I want to take some of that pressure off.

Because learning how to pray for your husband doesn’t begin with finding more powerful words. It begins with understanding what God actually asks of us when we come to Him in prayer.

Lord, Help My Unbelief: A Prayer When Faith Feels Hard

You’ve prayed about it more times than you can count.

At first, you prayed with confidence. You believed God was working even when you couldn’t yet see it. But now you’re praying about the same situation for the third year in a row.

And somewhere in the middle of another prayer, you think, “I don’t even know if I believe this will change anymore.”

Almost as quickly as you think it, the guilt creeps in. I mean, what kind of Christian doubts God while she prays?
