finding happiness after depression
In today’s show, Pam shares her journey through depression and how she learned to enjoy life again.
She takes us back to growing up in a strict home where she was not allowed to cry or share any kind of emotion. We talk about growing up in a generation that taught us to keep quiet about any kind of trouble in the house and always portray and stable, happy home.
Pam shares how six weeks after the birth of her third child, she found herself at the kitchen counter, stirring oatmeal and crying. After a visit to her gynecologist and a therapist, she was diagnosed with postpartum depression, given medication and sent home.
When after a time the meds quit working, Pam sought a support group where she was able to uncover the effects of a strict upbringing.
As Pam states, this wasn’t a big traumatic event, but rather an upbringing that just didn’t allow her to share her feelings. So as most of us do when we feel pain (and because as children, we know no differently), her body protected her by stuffing it and hiding it deep inside.
But as pain and trauma often does, it presented itself in the form of depression later in Pam’s life.
Pam shares her hard, but beautiful story of redemption and renewal and what she’s learned from her childhood. She shares how it changed her as both a parent and a child, and gives us practical advice on how to walk this out.
Whether you’re suffering from depression yourself, feel like you’ve failed your children or you’re walking alongside someone who is suffering, you’re going to love my conversation with Pam today.
So grab your favorite beverage, that basket of clothes that needs folding, or turn up the volume on your morning commute and listen to this week’s show, Finding Happiness After Depression.
