9 Lessons on Faith from the Furnace

In this story, King Nebuchadnezzar orders everyone in his kingdom to worship a golden statue, but Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refuse to bow down, choosing instead to remain faithful to God.

As punishment for not obeying, the king binds them and has them thrown into a blazing furnace, yet their unwavering trust in God brought them through unscathed.

This miraculous event leads the king to recognize the power of their God, and he promotes the three men for their unwavering faith. For women like you and I, who are seeking to grow closer to God, their story offers nine powerful lessons that we can apply in our own lives.

So let’s take a moment to break them down.

1. God’S Protection in the Midst of Our Trials

Imagine being thrown into a blazing furnace for refusing to bow down to an idol. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego faced this exact scenario, and yet, they emerged completely unharmed.

“But suddenly, Nebuchadnezzar jumped up in amazement and exclaimed to his advisers, “Didn’t we tie up three men and throw them into the furnace?” “Yes, Your Majesty, we certainly did,” they replied. “Look!” Nebuchadnezzar shouted. “I see four men, unbound, walking around in the fire unharmed! And the fourth looks like a god!”  Daniel 3:24-25 NLT

This demonstrates that even in our darkest moments, God is with us.

2. God Provides Comfort in Our Trials

When faced with this impossible choice, these men weren’t alone. A fourth figure, believed to be an angel of God, appeared with them.

Daniel 3 reminds us that God’s comforting presence is with us through every trial.

3. God Rewards Those Who Remain Steadfast

"Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshack, and Abednego to even higher positions in the province of Babylon." Daniel 3:30 NLT

When facing this fire, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego remained steadfast in their faith.

And it didn’t go unnoticed.

Not only were they saved from the fire, but they were also promoted and honored. This serves as a reminder that God rewards our faithfulness in ways we might not always expect.

4. There’s Freedom in Following God

Quote: "No human can bind what God wants to be free," in 9 powerful lessons from Daniel 3.

Despite being bound and thrown into the furnace, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego walked out free. This miraculous deliverance teaches us that when God decides to set us free, no human power can hold us captive.

(Can I just get an amen?)

In other words, when we choose to follow God, we break free from physical and spiritual bondage.

5. We Serve a God Who Delivers

The same power that delivered these three men from the fiery furnace is available to you and I today.

Our Father’s power is limitless and can work miracles in our lives, when we learn to put our faith in Him.

6. There Are Always Eternal Reasons for Temporary Trials

Because they chose to follow God and face the furnace with faith, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego made our Father known.

The trials we face always have purposes far beyond what we can see. This story encourages us to trust that God has eternal reasons for our temporary struggles, preparing and shaping us for something greater.

7. Our Destiny Rests in God’s Hands

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego knew their fate wasn’t determined by King Nebuchadnezzar but by God, so they chose to stand their ground.

This teaches us that our destiny lies securely in God’s hands, not in the hands of those around us.

“If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your power, Your Majesty. But even if he doesn’t, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.” Daniel 3:17-18

8. God Can Always Be Trusted

We serve a God of impossibility. A God who can be trusted in every situation.

As we see in this story, even when faced with death, these men trusted God wholeheartedly. This kind of trust is what we aim to cultivate in our own lives, knowing that God’s plans for us are always good.

9. God Will Be Glorified When We Remain True to Him

As I teach my students, we were created for one reason: to make God known and bring Him glory.

And when we choose to remain true to our Father, the impact will always go far and wide.

“Then Nebuchadnezzar said, “Praise to the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego! He sent his angel to rescue his servants who trusted in him. They defied the king’s command and were willing to die rather than serve or worship any god except their own God. Therefore, I make this decree: If any people, whatever their race or nation or language, speak a word against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, they will be torn limb from limb, and their houses will be turned into heaps of rubble. There is no other god who can rescue like this!” Daniel 3:28-29 NLT

For Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, their faithfulness brought glory to The Lord, impacting even King Nebuchadnezzar, who praised God afterward.

As we strive for steadfast faith, we too can lead others to our Father.

Lord, Help My Unbelief: A Prayer When Faith Feels Hard

You’ve prayed about it more times than you can count.

At first, you prayed with confidence. You believed God was working even when you couldn’t yet see it. But now you’re praying about the same situation for the third year in a row.

And somewhere in the middle of another prayer, you think, “I don’t even know if I believe this will change anymore.”

Almost as quickly as you think it, the guilt creeps in. I mean, what kind of Christian doubts God while she prays?

Maybe nothing is really wrong.

You’re getting up in the morning, going to work, making dinner. You’re answering texts, taking care of the people you love and doing the things that need to get done.

And you’re even praying.

But somewhere along the way, you realize you’re going through the motions more than actually enjoying any of it — and you miss feeling like yourself.
