My Migraine Story
When a random migraine entered my life, I had no idea that my life had forever changed. I would’ve never guessed I’d spend the next 10 years fighting tooth and nail to live a normal life again.
I had a job I loved but rarely made it to work. The exhaustion from the migraines and the 50-minute commute made it extremely hard. In fact, more times than not, I wound up sick on the side of the road, forcing me to turn back around and go home.
It was difficult to go anywhere because, with only one whiff of someone’s perfume, the whole room would spin so fast, that I could barely walk.
On a good week, some of the migraines would last just 24 hours. But most lasted for days, forcing me to make my way back to the ER or local doc in a box for a migraine cocktail.
I’d lay in bed, crying out to God; angry that He’d allow the migraines to take so much from me. It took all the energy I had, to put one foot in front of the other.
As I said, my life had completely changed. And I suspect yours has too.
Migraine remedies I’ve tried…
- Multiple meds
- Monthly injections
- Chiropractic care
- Eliminating different foods
…but nothing worked.
I used to tease that if the wind blew in a different direction, I’d get a migraine. My neurologist declared me, “his most difficult patient.”
I experienced temporary relief from some of the treatments above, but before long, I was back to the endless barrage of pain, nausea, and vertigo.
I imagine right about now you’re thinking, yep, that’s me!
Emotional Healing from a Chronic Illness
But I learned something in the mess of those migraines. Before I could experience any kind of physical healing, I first had to heal emotionally.
Because let’s face it, guilt and shame play a huge role in a chronic illness. And somewhere along the way, you realize you lost everything…including your identity.
You see, I’d spent so much time asking God, “Why me? Why would you let these migraines take everything from our lives?”
But then I realized, even Jesus suffered on this earth.
And by golly, if He went through this unimaginable pain and suffering, then who am I to think I should expect a life free of struggles?
It was a pivotal moment in my healing.
I realized I was camping out in my pain. I spent so much time saying, “woe is me,” that I had no room in my life to be healed and used by God.
Once I made the choice to no longer allow the migraines to control my life, I was then free to experience all God had for me — even in the midst of the migraines.
Oh, this isn’t easy, my friend.
It’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.
But when I stopped camping out in the pain of the migraines, everything changed.
Yes, there were still many days I couldn’t get out of bed. But there were also days that I made the choice to change my environment.
When I could, instead of laying in bed all day, I’d get a shower and move to the chair in the living room. Sometimes I would take a cold, dark washcloth and lay it across my eyes, while I slept on the loveseat on my front porch.
On other days, I’d put on something different than the pajamas I slept in — even if it was just to put on a clean pair.
I had to be open and willing to experience the healing God wanted for me before I could ever begin to heal physically.
I spent a lot of time asking God to prepare me for the healing I was so desperately seeking.
And when I began making those small changes, everything changed!
My circumstances didn’t — I was still getting multiple migraines every week, but I was finally beginning to heal emotionally, and it’s when I discovered it truly is possible to have peace and pain at the very same time.
And once I began to heal emotionally, I was open and ready for physical healing.
So when one day, I opened my inbox to a random email, I had no idea my life was about to change.
It was from someone who thought his client would make a great guest on my show. Truthfully, I wasn’t sure how a guy who owns a supplement store in Wisconsin would be a good fit, but I felt that nudge from God and said okay.
And it forever changed my life!
