3 Simple Ways to Foster Gratitude Every Day

A piece of paper with, "give thanks," written on it.
It’s easy to be grateful when life is going great. But it’s an entirely different different story when you hit the ground running in the morning, the phone won’t stop pinging, and your to-do list doubles before you’ve even had your first cup of coffee.

But if gratitude only shows up on the good days, that isn’t gratitude — it’s convenience. Real gratitude is learned, practiced, and rooted in God’s presence when life feels anything but easy.

This week, we’re beginning a 4-part series on gratitude in the Bible. We’ll uncover what it really means to live with a thankful heart — not just when life feels easy, but when everything around you feels like it’s falling apart.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll look at

  • how to practice gratitude daily
  • why gratitude can sometimes feel fake (and how to fix that)
  • what to do when you don’t feel thankful
  • how the Apostle Paul found reasons to give thanks — even in prison.

Each episode will help you see that gratitude isn’t about pretending everything’s okay when it isn’t. It’s about finding God’s presence right in the middle of it.

What Does Scripture Actually Say About Gratitude

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 NIV

In this episode of A Faithful God Podcast, I’ll unpack this well-known Bible verse, and talk about why most people misunderstand this verse, and why it truly means.

The truth is, God isn’t asking us to celebrate our trials and challenges; He’s inviting us to meet Him in the middle of them.

In this episode, you’ll learn…

  • What it really means to practice gratitude as a Christian
  • How to build small, consistent habits that keep you connected to the Holy Spirit
  • Why gratitude is more than just a feeling

Gratitude Lessons from the Wilderness

The Israelites had front-row seats to some of the biggest miracles in history, yet they still found themselves wandering in circles. What was supposed to be a short journey turned into forty years of frustration — not because God had forgot them, but because they’d forgotten God and all He did for them.

After witnessing these miraculous — the parting of the Red Sea, manna from heaven, water from a rock — the Israelites still slipped into cycles of grumbling and complaining.

In today’s show, we’ll break down three crucial truths we can learn from the Israelites about the downfalls of complaining.

We’ll learn how complaining…

  • draws us away from God’s faithfulness
  • magnifies the problem
  • keeps us circling the same desert the Israelites did

3 Tiny Habits to Practice Gratitude Daily

The habits I share today are simple on purpose. Why? Because small, repeated steps are what create true lasting transformation.

I’ll break down…

  • The First 60 Seconds. Before touching your phone, you’ll whisper three quick “thank You’s.” It doesn’t have to be difficult. It can be something as simples as, “Thank You for the breath I breathe. Thank You for my home. Thank You for another chance to serve You today.” Starting with God in the first 60 seconds of your day, trains your mind to live from a posture of gratitude.
  • The Doorway Pause. Every time you open a door — to the house, car, fridge, or even a drawer — breathe a one-line thanks. This habit teaches your heart to notice God in ordinary moments.
  • The Bless-Back. Think of one person who blessed you recently and bless them back: a kind text, a prayer, a donut or coffee drop-off.

These micro-habits are ridiculously easy, and yet, can completely change your perspective throughout your day.

Woman looking at her calendar with a basket of laundry, trying to figure out how to make time for God.

Why Do I Keep Starting Over With God?

Have you ever found yourself saying, “I’ll start again with God next week.”

Maybe you used to start your mornings with prayer, but lately your Bible has stayed closed and you feel like you’re constantly trying to catch up with God.

Maybe life has started demanding more than usual.

The kids need to be picked up, dinner still needs to be made and the laundry pile is growing faster than you can fold it. And by the time you finally sit down at the end of the day, you’re too exhausted to even say a prayer.

At first, you tell yourself you’ll get back to it tomorrow — but tomorrow comes and goes. Then a few more days pass. Before long, missing one day turns into three, then three days turn into a week.

And that’s when the guilt starts creeping in. Before you know it, you’re thinking to yourself, “I’ve failed again.”

Or maybe it’s been longer than a week. Maybe it’s been months — even years — since you really felt close to God, and you’re wondering if starting over is even possible at this point.

Either way, the question underneath is the same. Why do I keep ending up here?

A woman lies awake beside her sleeping husband, quietly reflecting on how to pray for him when she doesn't know what to say.

How to Pray for Your Husband When You Don’t Know What to Say

You noticed it at dinner.

Your husband was quieter than usual, and when you asked how work went, he said, “Fine.” But you’ve been married long enough to know when fine doesn’t really mean fine.

You knew something was weighing on him — something just felt off.

Later that night, lying beside him in the dark, you wished you knew how to help. So you did the one thing you knew you could do — you prayed, “Lord, help him.”

It was honest and exactly what you wanted God to do. But almost as soon as you said it, you started wondering if you should have said more.

Is that really enough? Shouldn’t I know how to pray for my own husband?

Maybe you’ve joined the 31-day prayer challenges for wives, or you started the prayer book that’s still sitting on your nightstand with a bookmark somewhere around chapter three. You’ve heard other women pray confidently for their husbands, covering everything from his work and health to your husband’s relationships, protection, and spiritual life.

Meanwhile, you’re struggling just to put one sentence together.

And when you love someone this much, it’s easy for that struggle to start feeling like more than simply not knowing what to say. You begin wondering if you’re doing this “right” or whether your prayers for him are making any difference at all.

But sometimes the reason we don’t know what to say isn’t because we have nothing to pray about. It’s because we’ve put so much pressure on ourselves to say the right thing that an honest prayer no longer feels like enough.

So before we talk about what to pray for your husband, I want to take some of that pressure off.

Because learning how to pray for your husband doesn’t begin with finding more powerful words. It begins with understanding what God actually asks of us when we come to Him in prayer.
