Today I’m answering the questions…

  • What does godliness mean in the Bible?
  • What does it mean to be godly?
  • Why is godliness important as a Christian?

Plus I’ll break down 13 examples of godliness in the Bible and how we can apply them in our own lives.

What Does Godliness Mean in the Bible

Godliness refers to a life that mirrors God’s character.

It’s not about physical training or outward appearance, but about the internal transformation inspired by the Holy Spirit. It’s renewing our minds and shaping us to live according to God’s standards, as seen in Romans 12:2.

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” NKJV

True godliness springs from a heart surrendered to God, driven by the desire to do good and love others as Christ loved us. It’s about living a life of quiet humility, filled with good deeds and purpose that align with God’s will — focusing not on financial gain or worldly treasures, but on spiritual fulfillment.

In his words to Timothy, the Apostle Paul paired godliness with contentment, stating that they are both of great gain. He reminds us to pursue godliness over material wealth.

“Now godliness with contentment is great gain.” NKJV

The Mystery of Godliness

Also, in his letter to Timothy, Paul describes the “mystery of godliness” as something that has been revealed through Christ.

“And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory.” 1 Timothy 3:16 NKJV

The life of Christ Jesus made godliness accessible to us; offering a living example of how to serve God and others.

This mystery, as the Apostle Paul describes it, isn’t about hidden secrets, but about understanding that true godliness is only possible through a relationship with God.

And as we grow in our knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ, we gain a better understanding of what it means to live a godly life.

Why Godliness is Important

Godliness is at the core of our Christian walk because it reflects the character of Christ in us.

It involves living in a way that honors God by embodying His holiness, love, and goodness in our lives.

Beautiful rays of sunshine coming through the clouds and a woman praying as she learns what godliness in the Bible means.

While we aren’t called to perfection, we’re called to strive for a life that mirrors the values of Christ — serving others, pursuing righteousness, and relying on the Holy Spirit to guide us through the ever-growing worldly distractions and challenges.

Godliness impacts our relationships, decisions, and actions, allowing us to live with purpose and reflect God’s love to the world around us.

As Paul explains to Timothy,

“Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.” 1 Timothy 4:8 NLT

This verse reminds us that godliness isn’t only beneficial for our present life, but also prepares us for eternal life with God. It’s a reflection of our decision to follow God’s will and shows how His grace can change us from the inside out.

This in turn, impacts everyone we touch.

What Does it Mean to Be a Godly Person

In The Book of Mysteries, Jonathan Cahn explains that Christ Jesus is the epitome of goodness. That He is holy, righteous, and loving. He explains that our Father is humble, because humility is part of goodness, and that Christ’s life is a gift to us and answers the needs of men.

Cahn continues to explain that to be a godly person, one would have,

“A life of goodness and holiness, a life of giving and selflessness, that answers the needs of those around us, that goes against the flow of this world, that overcomes evil and that makes a difference for having been lived.”

In other words, to be a godly person, we’re called to live the life of God, here on earth.

We’re called to be a blessing to those around us, overcome trials and challenges with steadfast faith, and change the world through our daily actions.

Quote: The Form of Godliness is when someone appears to look good or do the right thing according to God, but their inner attitude doesn't support their outward appearance.

What is A Form of Godliness

A form of godliness refers to someone appearing outwardly religious or moral but lacking true devotion to God.

It’s when people follow religious practices or display good behavior without a real heart for God, or the power of the Holy Spirit working in their lives.

This kind of superficial faith focuses on looking godly rather than living a life truly transformed by God’s grace.

In other words, it’s when someone appears to look good or do the right thing according to God, but their inner attitude doesn’t support their outward appearance.

In his second letter to Timothy, Paul warns him about people like this when he states,

“But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God — 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.” 2 Timothy 3:1-5 NIV

This passage reminds us that true godliness comes from a genuine relationship with God, not just from outward actions.

Examples of Godliness in the Bible

Throughout the pages of Scripture, we find many examples of godliness demonstrated by faithful men and women who reflected God’s character.

Their stories offer powerful lessons on what it means to pursue holiness, righteousness, and love.

It’s important to note that these individuals weren’t perfect. Rather, they demonstrated a deep commitment to following God’s will, even in the midst of their mistakes.

From Noah’s steadfast obedience in building the ark to Ruth’s unwavering loyalty, from King David’s repentant heart to the incredible example of Mary, mother of Jesus, these biblical figures illustrate how godliness can shape our lives and transform the world around us.

Let’s take a moment to dig into some of these examples now.

1. Examples of Godliness in the Bible: Noah

“Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.” Genesis 6:9 NIV

Noah lived during a time when the world was filled with violence and wickedness.

Despite the corruption surrounding him, Noah remained faithful to God and was obedient when God commanded him to build an ark. He followed our Father’s command to save his family and a remnant of creation from the coming flood.

Noah’s unwavering faith, even when mocked by those around him, showed his godliness in a world that had turned its back on God.

Noah’s righteousness and faithfulness set him apart from the corrupt society around him. His walk with God was consistent, and it was this relationship that allowed him to be part of God’s plan to preserve life.

2. Godliness Examples in the Bible: Abraham

“Abraham believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.” Genesis 15:6 NIV

Often called the father of faith, Abraham demonstrated godliness by trusting in God’s promises, even when they seemed impossible.

Although he and his wife Sarah were old and childless, God promised that Abraham would become the father of many nations and that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in the sky (Genesis 15:1-6).

Abraham’s faith was further tested when God asked him to sacrifice his promised son, Isaac.

Even though Abraham had not yet seen the fulfillment of God’s promise, he obeyed because he believed in God’s plan. His life is a powerful example of how godliness involves trusting God’s promises — even when the future is uncertain or the promises are delayed.

Abraham’s willingness to obey showed his complete reliance on God. His life is an example of how godliness is often about trusting God’s promises, even when we can’t see the outcome.

Abraham’s trust in God, despite the long wait for the promised son, was considered righteous and set a lasting example of godliness through unwavering faith.

3. Godliness in the Old Testament: King David

King David is often said to be a “man after God’s own heart”, as seen in 1 Samuel 13:14 when talking to Saul.

“But now your kingdom must end, for the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart. The Lord has already appointed him to be the leader of his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command.” NLT

This verse is important to David’s story because it highlights what set him apart — a devoted heart for God.

Woman holding her arms out and looking towards heaven.

This was demonstrated through his deep love for God, his humility, and his genuine repentance after his failings.

Despite his imperfections, David consistently sought our Father, showing humility, repentance, and a deep love for God’s law.

Through David’s life, we see that godliness doesn’t mean perfection.

Rather it’s a life committed to seeking God and aligning with His ways, no matter what we’ve done.

David’s devotion in the Psalms reflects a heart that truly understood and revered the “fear of God”; an essential aspect of godly character.

Through David’s everyday life, he teaches us that godliness is rooted in our relationship with God; even when we’ve made mistakes.

4. Ruth’s Godliness in the Bible

Ruth, a Moabite woman, showed incredible godliness through her loyalty to her mother-in-law, Naomi, and her faith in the God of Israel.

After her husband’s death, Ruth chose to stay with Naomi, leaving her own land and false gods to serve the one true God.

“Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.” Ruth 1:16 NIV

Her selflessness and faithfulness not only blessed Naomi but eventually led Ruth to become part of the lineage of Jesus; illustrating how godliness can transform, not only our own lives but the lives of others.

Ruth’s story reflects her deep commitment to Naomi and a willingness to follow God. Her declaration shows a heart fully devoted to God’s people and His ways; making her an example of godliness rooted in loyalty and sacrifice.

5. Daniel: Godliness in the Face of Persecution

“Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.” Daniel 6:10 NIV

Daniel’s life is a powerful example of godliness in the face of adversity.

Daniel with the lions.

Despite being held captive in Babylon and forced to live in a pagan culture, Daniel remained faithful to God.

His refusal of the command to stop praying to God, even when threatened with being thrown into a lion’s den, shows his unwavering commitment to living a godly life, regardless of the consequences. (Daniel 6)

Daniel’s godliness was evident through his consistent devotion to the worship of God through prayer. Even when faced with persecution, his commitment to seeking God never wavered.

His faithfulness was ultimately rewarded; glorifying God through his deep convictions to The Lord.

6. The Risky Godliness of Esther

Esther gives us another beautiful example of godliness by courageously risking her life to save the Jewish people from a plot of genocide.

As queen of Persia, she used her influence to plead with the king on behalf of her people, despite the danger it posed to her own life. Esther’s story demonstrates that godliness involves not just faith, but also the courage to stand up for what’s right — even when it requires personal sacrifice.

Esther's story demonstrates that godliness often means stepping out in faith to fulfill God's plan — even when it's risky.

In Ester 4:14, we see the pivotal moment when Esther realizes her godly purpose.

“For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” Esther 4:14 NIV

Her courage to act on behalf of her people is a powerful reminder that godliness often means stepping out in faith to fulfill God’s plan, even when it’s risky.

7. Joseph’s Godliness in Integrity

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people.” Genesis 50:20 NLT

Joseph demonstrated true godliness throughout his life, consistently showing both integrity and forgiveness in every situation.

Betrayed by his brothers and sold into slavery, Joseph maintained his trust in God throughout his trials.

When he rose to a position of power in Egypt, he chose to forgive his brothers rather than seek revenge. Joseph’s actions show how godliness involves forgiveness, even when we are wronged; trusting in God’s bigger plan.

His story demonstrates the power of a godly perspective.

Instead of holding onto bitterness, Joseph recognized that God had used his suffering for a greater good. This understanding allowed him to forgive and extend grace to his brothers.

8. Examples of Godliness in the Bible: Job

“God might kill me, but I have no other hope. I am going to argue my case with him.” Job 13:15 NLT

Job demonstrated godliness through his perseverance in the face of unimaginable loss and suffering.

Despite losing his family, wealth, and health, Job remained faithful to God, refusing to curse Him as his friends encouraged.

His story teaches us that godliness involves trusting in God’s goodness, even when we don’t understand why we’re suffering.

Job’s deep faith in God, even when everything seemed to be falling apart, is revealed in his unwavering trust in God’s plan; demonstrating that true faith and godliness endure, even in our suffering.

9. Samuel’s Life of Godliness

Samuel, the last judge of Israel and a prophet demonstrated godliness through his unwavering obedience to God and lifelong dedication to serving Him.

From a young age, Samuel was devoted to God’s service after his mother, Hannah, dedicated him to the Lord. Throughout his life, Samuel faithfully carried out God’s will, delivering messages to the people of Israel and anointing their kings, including Saul and David.

“As Samuel grew, the Eternal One guided him and none of His words were lost on Samuel.” 1 Samuel 3:19 The Voice

His devotion, honesty, and integrity in leading the nation of Israel reflect his godly character, illustrating how God was with Samuel because of his faithfulness and obedience.

Samuel’s godliness is shown in his lifelong commitment to speaking God’s truth and guiding Israel according to God’s direction.

10. Deborah’s Godliness in Courage

“But those from rural areas stayed away, the destitute in Israel kept far off, Until I, Deborah, arose to be a mother to Israel.” Judges 5:7 The Voice

Deborah, a prophetess and judge of Israel, demonstrated godliness through her leadership, courage, and faith in God’s plan.

Woman of god

As a wise and faithful leader, she guided the nation of Israel during a time of oppression and led them to victory over their enemies. Deborah’s godliness is evident in her trust in God’s instructions and her willingness to act according to His will, even when the stakes were high.

She inspired Barak and the people of Israel to have faith in God’s deliverance, showing how godly leadership can inspire others to trust in The Father.

When others were hesitant, Deborah stepped up in faith to guide Israel according to God’s plan, demonstrating her trust in God’s mighty power to bring victory.

11. Mary, Mother of Jesus: Godliness in Submission

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.” Luke 1:38 NIV

Mary, the mother of Jesus, demonstrated extraordinary godliness through her humble submission to God’s will. When the angel Gabriel told her she would give birth to the Messiah, Mary accepted God’s plan with faith and trust, despite the challenges it would bring.

Her faith-filled obedience and willingness to serve God, regardless of the cost, teach us what true godliness looks like in the form of humility and surrender.

Mary’s willingness to submit to God’s will, even though it would change her life forever, illustrates her humble acceptance of God’s plan and is a model of godliness through obedience and trust.

12. Godliness in the Life of the Apostle Paul

The Apostle Paul exemplified godliness through his unwavering faith and commitment to spreading the word of God.

After his dramatic conversion, Paul dedicated his life to preaching about Christ, often enduring persecution, imprisonment, and hardship.

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” Galatians 2:20 NIV

Image of the Apostle Paul leaning up against a wall, dressed in orange clothing as he demonstrates what it means to live a godly life.

His letters to the early churches provide a roadmap for godly living. They are a testament to what it means to be fully committed to God’s mission.

Paul’s life reminds us that godliness sometimes means going against the flow of this world and facing persecution.

He encouraged early believers to live godly lives, standing firm against false doctrines and the ungodly behavior prevalent in their culture.

For Paul, a godly life was one of sacrifice. He poured himself out as a living sacrifice for the gospel, aiming to always live in a way that pleased God (Romans 12:1), no matter what he faced.

13. Lydia’s Godliness in the Bible

“One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message. When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. ‘If you consider me a believer in the Lord,’ she said, ‘come and stay at my house.’ And she persuaded us.” Acts 16:14-15 NIV

Lydia’s godliness was shown in her hospitality and generosity.

After responding to Paul’s message and being baptized, Lydia immediately opened her home to Paul and his companions; offering them a place to stay.

Her hospitality is an act of service to God, demonstrating that she not only accepted the message of Christ in her heart but also put her faith into action by caring for others.

Lydia’s generosity, especially as a woman of wealth, reflects her desire to support God’s mission. This highlights her willingness to use her resources for the good of others.

It’s an important characteristic of godliness — selflessly serving others as an outpouring of her faith in our Father.

Godly Living through the Power of the Holy Spirit

So what is the Holy Spirit’s role in our journey toward godliness?

Quote: "Godly living isn’t achieved by our own strength but through the Holy Spirit, who guides and shapes us to reflect the nature of Christ."

In Galatians, Paul lists the fruit of the Spirit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. He explains them as qualities that embody godliness (Galatians 5:22-23).

Through the Holy Spirit, we receive divine power to live in a way that reflects God’s love.

This inner transformation allows us to be a light in a world filled with worldly passions and pleasures.

It reminds us that godly living isn’t achieved in our own strength. Instead, it’s made possible through the Holy Spirit. A spirit that guides and shapes us to reflect the nature of Christ.

HOW TO Live a Godly Life Today

Godliness extends to all aspects of our lives, influencing our decisions, relationships, and even our work. The will of God is for us to live with quiet integrity, reflecting His love in all we do.

Scripture calls us to be a living sacrifice, (Romans 12:1); aligning our daily actions with the teachings of Jesus and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

This includes resisting the urge to follow worldly pursuits and instead seek what pleases God.

Woman praying for a godly life.

Whether in good times or facing challenges, Godly living is a daily choice we must make.

While God doesn’t call us to walk this out perfectly, our goal should be to reflect His love and character as best we can every day.

And when we fall short (because we will), we simply need to turn to God, admit our mistakes, and ask for forgiveness.

Our Father’s love is far greater than our failures, so there’s no reason to distance ourselves from Him.

Instead, we have to learn to recognize and acknowledge our shortcomings and lift them up to the glory of God so that He can work in and through us.

13 Powerful Examples of Godliness in the Bible

Following Christ means more than simply avoiding godless chatter and worldly passions. It means actively seeking to impact those around us with the love of God.

A godly life isn’t about perfection but about striving to honor God in every part of our lives.

From Bible stories of early believers to the life of Mary, mother of God, we find that true godliness springs from a heart aligned with God’s will. Through the Holy Spirit, we have the power and ability to live as Jesus did – loving, serving, and making a difference in the lives of those around us.

Just as the Son of God lived among us, we too should live as though His life flows through us (because it does), making God’s love known to the world. And the Holy Spirit is there to guide us every step of the way.

Why Do I Keep Starting Over With God?

Have you ever found yourself saying, “I’ll start again with God next week.”

Maybe you used to start your mornings with prayer, but lately your Bible has stayed closed and you feel like you’re constantly trying to catch up with God.

Maybe life has started demanding more than usual.

The kids need to be picked up, dinner still needs to be made and the laundry pile is growing faster than you can fold it. And by the time you finally sit down at the end of the day, you’re too exhausted to even say a prayer.

At first, you tell yourself you’ll get back to it tomorrow — but tomorrow comes and goes. Then a few more days pass. Before long, missing one day turns into three, then three days turn into a week.

And that’s when the guilt starts creeping in. Before you know it, you’re thinking to yourself, “I’ve failed again.”

Or maybe it’s been longer than a week. Maybe it’s been months — even years — since you really felt close to God, and you’re wondering if starting over is even possible at this point.

Either way, the question underneath is the same. Why do I keep ending up here?

A woman lies awake beside her sleeping husband, quietly reflecting on how to pray for him when she doesn't know what to say.

How to Pray for Your Husband When You Don’t Know What to Say

You noticed it at dinner.

Your husband was quieter than usual, and when you asked how work went, he said, “Fine.” But you’ve been married long enough to know when fine doesn’t really mean fine.

You knew something was weighing on him — something just felt off.

Later that night, lying beside him in the dark, you wished you knew how to help. So you did the one thing you knew you could do — you prayed, “Lord, help him.”

It was honest and exactly what you wanted God to do. But almost as soon as you said it, you started wondering if you should have said more.

Is that really enough? Shouldn’t I know how to pray for my own husband?

Maybe you’ve joined the 31-day prayer challenges for wives, or you started the prayer book that’s still sitting on your nightstand with a bookmark somewhere around chapter three. You’ve heard other women pray confidently for their husbands, covering everything from his work and health to your husband’s relationships, protection, and spiritual life.

Meanwhile, you’re struggling just to put one sentence together.

And when you love someone this much, it’s easy for that struggle to start feeling like more than simply not knowing what to say. You begin wondering if you’re doing this “right” or whether your prayers for him are making any difference at all.

But sometimes the reason we don’t know what to say isn’t because we have nothing to pray about. It’s because we’ve put so much pressure on ourselves to say the right thing that an honest prayer no longer feels like enough.

So before we talk about what to pray for your husband, I want to take some of that pressure off.

Because learning how to pray for your husband doesn’t begin with finding more powerful words. It begins with understanding what God actually asks of us when we come to Him in prayer.
